16 Mar 1946: The County Leitrim Society of New York traces its roots as far back as 1895. Without a doubt, the biggest event of the year was always the ball held around St. Patrick’s Day.

In 1946, the ball was held at the Palm Garden in New York City - a popular venue for Irish organisations of the era. This one set a record for attendance.

If you were a lucky little boy or girl you might be given the privelage of representing Uncle Sam or Máthair Éireann at the ball and/or parade.

This tradition lives on to this day, and symbolises the society’s pride in their homeland but also the nation they now called home.

If you look closely, you will see a pair of snappily dressed youngsters in the front row, proudly doing just that.
