Camelot Comes to Ireland
26/06/2022

26 Jun 1963: JFK boarded a flight from Germany to Ireland after delivering his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech earlier in the day. He had departed the U.S. a few days prior on a 10 day European tour. Kennedy could trace his Irish roots to before An Gorta Mór (The Great Hunger). The Fitzgeralds originally hailed from Co. Limerick and the Kennedys from Co. Wexford. Proud of his heritage, he made sure his itinerary included several days in Ireland, marking the 1st official state visit to The Republic (only 14 years old at the time) by a sitting American President. While the trip was packed with state business, Kennedy left room in his schedule to visit relatives and even the Kennedy Homestead in the townland of Dunganstown, County Wexford. Sadly, just five months later, Camelot would come to an end in Dallas, Texas. Make it a point to visit the Kennedy Homestead if you get the chance...
